Going into Round Two, I (Nathan) have a slender one point lead (thanks, Wakefield) over Ian. It’s still early days though, as all the Super League coaches have been quick to point out all weekend, and still plenty of time for the lead to change hands.

We saw a few surprises in Round One, starting with a memorable 0-1 scoreline in the first game of the season, with the decisive point coming only in golden point. I very much doubt we’ll see the like of that again for many years. Following that, relative underdogs Castleford pushed Hull KR closer than anyone predicted pre-match, with that match also going all the way to golden point, with last years Grand Finalists eventually prevailing 19-18 at Craven Park.

Newcomers Wakefield went to Headingley and came away with the two points in a result that only I seemed to foresee (okay, that might be an exaggeration), again by a slim margin. The only blow-out came at St Helens, who beat an extremely weakened (and controversial) Salford side 82-0. Both myself and Ian had predicted a much closer scoreline in that game, with Ian even picking Salford to win, albeit before the squad selection was announced, and it remains to be seen which Red Devils side will be seen at Salford Community Stadium this Saturday.

The weekend was rounded off by an interesting tie at the John Smith’s Stadium, as the injury-stricken Giants pushed the Warrington Wolves all the way, but fell to an eventual 12-20 defeat at the hands of Sam Burgess’ men. This first round has certainly given Ian and I plenty to think about as we make our Round Two predictions.
