Despite making the critical error of backing Hull FC to beat the reigning champions Wigan Warriors (what was I thinking?!) I (Nathan) have started to open up a bit more of a lead on my erstwhile rival, Ian after Round Two, courtesy of two predictions that fell within the ten-point margin, bagging me four sweet, sweet bonus points.

The weekend of rugby league opened up with newly-promoted Wakefield Trinity being the latest unfancied side to push Hull KR to the limit, following their golden point victory over Castleford in Round One. Only a missed Max Jowitt conversion stopped the Robins having to endure two extra-time periods in successive weeks, holding on to beat the West Yorkshire outfit 14-12. There was bad news though, as star playmaker Mikey Lewis hobbled off in the second half, remerging after the making in a protective boot. Many KR fans now anxiously await the outcome of scans to see if their star man will play a further part in this season.

It was a resumption of normal service when the champions Wigan visited Hull FC on Friday night, as they breezed past the Black and Whites 46-4. Hull were hopeful of a performance similar to that of their opening weekends in the south of France when they opened their season by convincingly beating Catalans, but it wasn’t to be, as Wigan showed no signs of being distracted by their Las Vegas date with Warrington next week to dispatch the Arlie Birds with relative ease.

Speaking of Warrington, they too were victorious on Friday night, just edging past a keen Catalans side by a score of 18-12. Catalans were chasing the game from the start, and despite a spirited fightback, they were held off by the Wire, who go into their Las Vegas fixture with two wins from two, and a spring in their step.

Saturday saw the Salford Red Devils return to full strength following their off-the-pitch struggles, even though their first-choice side couldn’t stop the Leeds Rhinos from winning by a comfortable margin of 32-6. Even though Salford score the first points, through second rowers Kallum Watkins, Leeds hit back quickly and decisively, eventually running away with the tie, and making sure that solitary try was all Salford had to show for their efforts.

Castleford hoped to carry over their impressive form shown in their narrow Golden Point loss to Hull KR on the opening weekend when they welcomed St Helens to the Jungle on Saturday evening. The Saints, fresh off their 82-0 rout of Salford’s reserve side last week, showed no sign of slowing their roll as they cruised to a 46-6 victory in West Yorkshire. Their two convincing wins leaves them sitting pretty at the summit of Super League at this early stage, with a points difference of well over 100, it gives the ten-time Super League champions a great advantage to kick-start their season.

Last, but my no means least, the Leopards roared past Huddersfield on Sunday night as they also made it two wins from their opening two games when they put Luke Robinson’s men down by a scoreline of 24-10. Following their historic victory over the Wigan Warriors last week, the Leopards were pushed hard by a game Huddersfield side, until a flurry of late tries saw the Leopards into an unassailable lead. To cap off a great day for Leigh fans, it was also announced that their talismanic hooker Edwin Ipape had been tied down to a new six-year contract extension at the Leigh Sports Village, committing him to the club until the end of the 2031 season.
