With the Super League taking a break this weekend, the prediction post is being split into two parts, with this past weekend’s results being covered this week, and round five’s predictions being released next week after the Challenge Cup fixtures.

The weekend kicked off with perhaps the game of the season so far as Hull FC and Leigh Leopards battled to a 22-22 draw. Unable to be separated after eighty minutes, as well as the full ten minute time limit of golden point extra time, the game will also be defined, unfortunately, by controversial refereeing decisions, with both Hull FC and Leigh making cases for those calls costing them the game. The Leopards will point towards a controversial try for Lewis Martin that sent the game into extra time, and Hull FC will bemoan a decision to deny them a penalty for a kick-off on the full, which was adjudged to have been taken out by Tom Briscoe, in a call even called incorrect by the RFL themselves.

There were no such disappointments for the team on the other side of the River Hull, as Hull KR claimed a 20-10 win away at St Helens. With both teams going into the game undefeated, and Leigh having dropped points the night before, this was a game that would establish an early leader in the league table. On the night, it was a spirited Hull KR performance that took them to the summit of the league at this early stage, with a returning Mikey Lewis getting on the scoresheet, alongside a brace from Oliver Gildart, and Tom Davies, they put the Saints to the sword and came away with their fourth win from their opening four games.

On Friday nights other game, Castleford Tigers claimed their first win of the season over fellow struggler Salford Red Devils. Salford, still beset by off-the-field issues surrounding their finances, could only name a seventeen-man squad for the game, which still included some of their big names such as Mark Sneyd, and Nene MacDonald, despite the sustainability cap placed back onto the team. They were no match for Danny McGuire’s Castleford side on the night though, losing out by a scoreline of 22-14.

Leeds’ dismal run of form in the South of France continued on Saturday, as they came out on the wrong end of a 11-0 scoreline. This result, their third scoreless visit to Perpignan in a row, drops the Rhinos to 6th, and was Catalans first victory of the season, following defeats at the hands of Hull, Warrington, and Leigh to start off their 2025 campaign. It will be hoped that this first victory will spark a revitalisation of the Dragons, who also finished 2024 poorly, with head coach Steve McNamara in particular likely to be feeling the pressure if they do not kick on.

The weekend of rugby league was rounded out by home fixtures for both sides who were off flying the Super League flag in Las Vegas the week prior, as the Warrington Wolves hosted Wakefield Trinity, and the reigning champions Wigan Warriors entertained the Huddersfield Giants.

Unfortunately for Sam Burgess’ side, it was only a happy return to home soil for the Warriors, as they shook off their own Vegas hangover to beat the Giants 44-18, whilst Warrington slumped to a 30-16 defeat to Trinity in a disappointing return to the Halliwell Jones. All those in primrose and blue are likely to be thankful of a visit to Widnes Vikings in the cup this week, as they bid to get their form back on track.
