Current Score: Nathan 39 – Ian 27

Not a good round this week for Ian, as he only managed to pick up a single, solitary point for his beloved Hull FC’s victory over Wakefield this past week (incidentally, Nathan got the winner wrong and still got more points for the fixture because of his closer score prediction), and so the gap between our two erstwhile predictors has increased to twelve points.

The weekend of fixtures got off to a surprising start as Salford, still under a sustainability cap, managed to brush past fellow early season strugglers Huddersfield Giants on their way to a 23-10 win. In a week where Salford continued to lose players and uncertainty still reigns, this victory will be a welcome relief to their fans.

Friday evening saw two incredibly close contests, with title challengers St Helens & Warrington Wolves meeting, as well as Wakefield Trinity hosting a reinvigorated Hull FC side. It was the Wolves who claimed a statement victory at St Helens, as debutant Marc Sneyd put in a man of the match winning performance on the their way to a 14-12 win against the Saints, who have now lost two home fixtures on the bounce.

Across the pennines in Wakefield, Hull FC managed to follow up their shocking elimination of the reigning champions the Wigan Warriors from the Challenge Cup as they defeated a game Wakefield Trinity side at the DIY Kitchens stadium. It will be a game perhaps remembered for referee/video referee decisions, as Wakefield had three tries chalked off, but to concentrate on that would do an injustice to the hard work of both teams to produce a highly entertaining game.

Speaking of the Warriors, they were on the wrong end of another surprising defeat on Saturday evening, as they were edged out by the Leeds Rhinos at Headingley. A late (and once again controversial due to the video referee) try from Jack Sinfield and conversion from Jake Connor was enough to see the Rhinos squeak past the Warriors 12-10. Last seasons quadruple winners will hope that they will be quick to pick up the pieces, and get their season back on track following a disappointing few weeks, starting from when they host Salford this coming Sunday.

The other Saturday night game saw the Catalans Dragons ease past the Castleford Tigers at the Mend-a-Hose Jungle. Both teams went into the game in a poor vein of form, but it was Catalans who managed to hit back in this game, running out comfortable 26-4 winners,

The weekend was rounded off with the top-of-the-table clash between first-placed Hull KR and second-placed Leigh Leopards, and following a highly impressive performance, it is the Robins who have set out their stall as the team to beat at this early stage of the season. Rovers turned in a dominant defensive display to shut-out the Leopards, their second clean sheet in a row if one is to count the cup game against Oldham, as Rovers beat the Leythers 30-0 in front of a raucous home crowd.
