Ian is starting to gain ground once again after round six, bringing the gap down to just ten points, helped by the fact that some of his scoreline predictions were closer than Nathan’s. Nathan did manage to correctly predict the first try scorer in the Catalans-Saints game, however, which, if memory serves, is the first time either of us has gotten one of those since the opening round.

Round six got off to a flying start in West Yorkshire as Hull FC weathered the challenge of the Castleford Tigers to climb to second in the Super League table. Barnstorming prop forward Herman Ese’ese was unplayable in a man-of-the-match winning performance, which was highlighted by a try that would make even the most accomplished circus jugglers proud, as he fumbled and re-gathered the ball in mid-air, while brushing off tacklers as he went. He would also go on to put in an impressive shift in FC’s cup loss to cross-city rivals Hull KR this past weekend.

On Friday night, Leigh Leopards met Wakefield Trinity for the first of their back-to-back matches against each other, with the teams drawing each other in the Challenge Cup quarter finals the week after also. It was Wakefield who took the spoils in the league, taming the toothless Leopards with relative ease at the Leigh Sports Village by a scoreline of 40-14. Leigh would get their revenge the weekend after, however, defeating the Trin to book their place in the Challenge Cup semi-finals.

In Friday’s other game, it was another close contest for the Leeds Rhinos, who conceded a late try following a controversial sin-binning to fall to a 16-14 defeath to the Warrington Wolves. The Rhinos had lead until the final few minutes, when Keenan Palasia was sent to the bin for an apparent high shot. From the back of the penalty, the Wolves scored the winning try, taking them up to fifth in the table.

It was a close encounter in the South of France for Saturday’s game, as St Helens managed to just about squeak past a Sam Tomkins-inspired Catalans Dragons side by a scoreline of 14-13. Two drop goals from Jonny Lomax was the difference on the day to help the Saints over the line, as they climbed up to fourth in the table.

Unfortunately for the beleaguered Huddersfield and Salford sides “close” was not how you would describe their games the following day, as both sides shipped over fifty points in their games against Hull KR and Wigan Warriors, respectively. The league leaders Hull KR consolidated their position at the top with a 50-4 victory of the bottom-of-the-table Giants, whilst Wigan breezed past the struggling Red Devils, who are still affected by a sustainability cap, by a scoreline of 54-0.
