After a nightmare round for myself and a storming one from Ian, it’s well and truly game on in the competition with just one point separating us before Easter! Somehow I’ve managed to whittle away a sixteen point lead down to a single point in a astonishing capitulation fitting of Salford Red Devils/Castleford Tigers/Huddersfield Giants (delete/add team however you feel).

Speaking of the Red Devils, round seven of the 2025 season kicked off with the beleaguered side facing off with an inconsistent Leeds side. With the Manchester-based side still being under a sustainability cap, there was only ever going to be one result here, as even the hot-and-cold Rhinos couldn’t mess up an opportunity for two points here. Despite a dogged performance from Salford’s side (made up predominantly of reserve, academy, and loan players), Leeds walked away with a 28-0 win.

The biggest tie of the round took place on Friday night with last season’s quadruple-winners Wigan Warriors visiting current league leaders Hull KR at a rowdy-as-ever Sewell Group Craven Park. Much like the final two meetings of these sides from last year, it was a fiercely competitive game for the most part, but Hull KR made too many errors and ended up tasting their first defeat of the season as the reigning champions prevailed by a scoreline of 28-12. Both teams have local derbies to look forward to this week; Hull KR will be hoping to get back to winning ways against Hull FC, whilst Wigan will be looking to continue their momentum at home to St Helens, with both games taking place on Good Friday.

The other Friday night game saw St Helens welcome Wakefield Trinity to the Totally Wicked Stadium. With the Saints hoping to bounce back following their Challenge Cup exit at the hands of Warrington Wolves last week. It looked as though it was going to be an easy ride for the famous Red V as they went into halftime with a comfortable 20-0 lead, but Wakefield mounted a spirited comeback in the second half, giving the Saints a scare. Luckily for the Merseyside outfit, they managed to hang on to their lead, ultimately prevailing by a score of 26-14 against Daryl Powell’s side.

The side who dumped the Saints out of the cup the week previous had their own night to forget on Saturday, as the Warrington Wolves were defeated at home to Hull FC, by a score of 28-16. It was once again a tale of two halves with the Black and Whites going into halftime with a 26-4 lead. Warrington were left to rue their slow start, and lack of accuracy from the kicking tee as none of their four tries were converted on the day.

Castleford’s slow start to the 2025 season continued on Saturday, as they hosted the Leigh Leopards, who had advanced to the CHallenge Cup semi-finals the previous weekend. The Leopards were in control of the game from the opening stages, and managed to see off the toothless Tigers 20-6. Castleford will be hoping for a swift return to form as they visit local rivals Wakefield on Thursday evening.

Another team experiencing a torrid 2025 season so far is the Huddersfield Giants, whose season limped on on Sunday afternoon with another defeat, this time at the hands of the Catalans Dragons, taking their record to seven losses from seven games. The injury-ravaged Giants had periods of the game where they looked to be in the ascendancy, but they were fleeting moments, and the Dragons returned to the South of France with two points following a 38-18 victory.
