Unbelievably, we came very close to having our first spot-on prediction in this competition, as I managed to get the scoreline right for the Warrington vs Hull FC game, just the winner the wrong way around! It’s fair to say that Ian dreads whenever I predict his beloved black and whites to win, as they always seemingly end up losing. If I knew I had this power I’d have started using it much sooner!

Round sixteen started off at the home of the current league leaders Hull KR as they welcomed the challenge of Wakefield Trinity. Wakefield would have been hopeful of a good result following their shock victory over the Wigan Warriors the week previously. It was not to be for the West Yorkshire outfit, however, as a spirited second-half performance from the Robins saw them off by a score on 34-10, in the process setting a club record for the best-ever start to a season.

Friday evening also saw a clash between two teams chasing third place in the table, as the Leigh leopards travelled to Leeds to face the Rhinos. In a very high-scoring game, the Rhinos prevailed, beating their Lancastrian rivals by a scoreline of 48-30 to move up into third place. Both teams have pivotal games coming up this coming weekend as the Rhinos travel to Hull KR and the Leythers host champions Wigan Warriors.

Saturday was a busy day in the Super League which saw three games played across the afternoon. Firstly, the Giants had a torrid trip to the South of France as they were brushed aside by fellow strugglers Catalans Dragons, who produced their best performance thus far under interim coach Joel Tomkins, beating the Giants 32-0 in the Perpignan sunshine.

Warrington Wolves managed their first win since their Wembley defeat as they beat Hull FC 24-10 at home. The Wolves will be hoping this result is the start of a turnaround for their season, as they sit two places and three points below the play-off spots.

Saturday’s final game saw a thriller played at the Mend-a-Hose Jungle as Castleford pushed reigning champions Wigan all the way, before falling to a devastating late try that saw them condemned to a 26-20 loss on home soil. Many will point to the controversial video refereeing call that saw Harry Smith go unpenalised for a blatant obstruction as the turning point of the game, and it’s hard to argue that the game could have had a much different ending had that penalty been given.

Finally, Sunday saw Salford fall to yet another defeat, this time away at the Totally Wicked Stadium at the hands of St Helens. Despite having named their strongest side in quite some time, it wasn’t enough to prevent the Saints running out as winners by a scoreline of 58-0.
