It was a real mixed bag for both of us this week. Ian only managed to correctly predict the winner for half of the rounds’ games, and my team Hull KR had their winning streak snapped at the hands of the Leeds Rhinos at Home. At least I can console myself with a nice forty-point lead on my erstwhile rival in this contest.
Round seventeen of the 2025 Super League began with a clash between two of the basement-dwellers of the season as Castleford Tigers hosted Huddersfield Giants. Both teams have recently given reigning champions Wigan Warriors a run for their money in recent weeks, and put on an entertaining start to the round, with the Huddersfield Giants coming away with the spoils in West Yorkshire, beating the Tigers by a score of 30-12.
Wigan Warriors suffered their fourth loss of 2025 on Friday night, and the second loss to the Leigh Leopards at that, as Leigh beat the quadruple-winners at home by a score of 18-8. The Battle of the Borough offered up one of the games of the season, with a late try by Owen Trout sealing the win for the Leopards as they briefly moved up into third.
Warrington’s season continues to show signs of improvement as they secured their second win in as many weeks over the Salford Red Devils. The Devils showed an admirable amount of fight against the Wolves but fell eventually to a score of 24-12.
Hull FC’s woes at home showed no signs of abating as they approach the year mark without a victory at the MKM Stadium, this time falling to St Helens by a scoreline of 13-6. The two sides offered up another compelling contest in a great weekend of rugby league. The Arlie Birds will be hoping to turn their luck around at home to Wakefield later this week.
Speaking of Wakefield, they moved up into the play-off spots this past weekend as they thrashed the Catalans Dragons 44-6 at home. The Trin were in imperious form and the Dragons once again faltered as Daryl Powell’s men ran riot. The chances of Les Dracs making the top six shrink more and more each week.
To close out the weekend, Hull KR’s eight-match winning run came to a close at the hands of the Leeds Rhinos, who became the first team other than Wigan to defeat the Robins in the past twelve months. Hull KR were made to rue their first half missed chances as the RHinos scored fourteen unanswered points in the second half to come away 14-8 victors.
