It’s safe to say I had a bit of a nightmare in this round. I only guessed two correct winners, and am only still in such a comfortable lead by virtue of my forty-point cushion established last week. A few surprise results proved to be my undoing this past week, but will I regain my footing in round nineteen?

Before we get to that though, we must look back on the week that was, starting in West Hull, where Hull FC finally broke their home hoodoo by narrowly overcoming fellow play-off contenders Wakefield Trinity by a score of 16-10. Trinity went into halftime leading 10-0, only to concede sixteen unanswered points in the second half, with a try from Lewis Martin proving to be the game-winner.

Friday night saw two games played out, with three of the teams involved involved in the race for top four, or maybe even top six. Firstly, there was the low-scoring but high intensity game between the Leeds Rhinos and St Helens. The Rhinos were looking to follow up their victory against league leaders Hull KR with a home victory, but a single St Helens try, scored by Owen Dagnall, as well as a penalty added by Jonny Lomax, saw the Red V walk away 6-0 winners.

In Friday nights other game, the Wigan Warriors hosted a Huddersfield Giants team who had given them a fright away from home mere weeks ago. In the early stages of the game, it looked as though Huddersfield were gearing up for another challenge when they raced into a 10-0 lead. Unfortunately, that’s as good as it got for the cowbell army, as the Warriors rallied to score thirty unanswered points to win the game 30-10.

League leaders Hull KR’s mid-season slump continued on Saturday night away at the Leigh Leopards, with Adrian Lam’s side taking advantage of a weary-looking Robins outfit to run away 28-10 winners. The game looked to be a close one for arguably the first fifty minutes, before Leigh’s dominance with the ball saw them run away with the game in the final quarter. KR’s lead at the top of Super League has been cut down to just two points now, albeit with a decent-enough points difference cushion.

In Saturday’s other game, the Robins’ next opponents the Catalans Dragons welcomed the side the red-and-whites defeated at Wembley last month, the Warrington Wolves. It was a close encounter in Perpignan, with the game going down to the wire (no pun intended). A last-minute try from Josh Thewlis saw the Wolves home, flying home with a 24-20 victory.

The rounds final match saw the biggest upset of the entire weekend as perennial strugglers the Salford Red Devils bagged only their second victory of the season as they overcame the Castleford Tigers 26-22 at the Salford Community Stadium. It provided a rare piece of positivity for a club who have been swamped with bad news all season, and with more bad news emerging in the days since, it may well prove to be the last bright spot in a very dark period for the Red Devils.
