It was a real mixed bag of a weekend, this one. Incidentally, that’s my contribution to the ‘biggest understatement of the year’ competition. There was a competitive game between top sides (Leigh vs Leeds), a surprise result (Huddersfield vs Catalans), and then came the crushingly depressing finale (Hull FC vs Salford), but enough has been – and will be – said about that game. I will be posting more on my thoughts on the Salford situation on this website later this week once the fallout has died down a bit, today, I’ll just cover it in a factual and unbiased manner.
The job of kicking off round twenty-one fell to two teams currently fighting it out for a top four finish, that being the Leigh Leopards and the Leeds Rhinos. In a close-fought game at the Leigh Sports Village, the Rhinos came out on top by a score of 22-14. A result which leave them level on points with fourth-placed St Helens in the table.
Friday night saw a pair of games played out, with Wakefield Trinity hosting St Helens, and the Warrington Wolves entertaining the second-placed Wigan Warriors. Wakefield failed to make their home advantage pay as they fell 34-4 to the Saints, and Wigan eventually dispatched Warrington 24-18, in a game which was much closer than most people anticipated beforehand.
It was another two-game day on Saturday with league leaders Hull KR at home to the Castleford Tigers, and Huddersfield Giants playing host to the Catalans Dragons. Hull KR restored their four-point lead at the top of Super League with a routine 34-6 victory over the Tigers, whereas Huddersfield produced the shock of the round by beating Catalans 18-6 at the Accu Stadium.
The round ended at the MKM Stadium in West Hull, where Hull FC produced a professional display to defeat Salford Red Devils 80-6. Lewis Martin bagged himself four tries on the day, meanwhile Zak Hardaker equalled the club record for goals scored in one game by slotting twelve conversions over.
