It was a weekend of varied fortunes in the Betfred Super League. On one hand, Hull KR managed to overcome their Wigan hoodoo by winning the ‘Battle of the Brick’ and going six points clear, on the other, however, saw Salford Red Devils having to withdraw from their scheduled fixture as their rollercoaster of a season took another stomach-churning lurch downwards.

The weekend of action started off in Warrington, where two teams struggling against expectations tried to keep alive their play-off hopes as the Wolves hosted the Catalans Dragons. It was your classic ‘tale of two halves’ affair at the Halliwell Jones, with Catalans managing to throw away a 22-6 lead in the first half, eventually losing 30-22. This result keeps Wire’s playoff aspirations alive, whereas the Dragons can now no longer mathematically reach the top six.

Friday night saw the much-hyped ‘Battle of the Brick’ between the top two sides in the competition in the forms of hosts (and reigning champions) Wigan Warriors, and current table-toppers Hull KR, who would go six points clear at the top of the table with a win. After a defensive arm wrestle of a game, it was the Robins who flew home with their red breasts proudly puffed out, downing Wigan 10-6 and moving one step closer to the League Leaders Shield.

Saturday saw two games played out, one in West Yorkshire, where the top-four chasing Leeds Rhinos faced the struggling Castleford Tigers, and one in East Yorkshire, where fellow top-four chasers Leigh Leopards travelled to play-off hopefuls Hull FC. It was a dismal afternoon for the Tigers at the Mend-a-Hose Jungle, as Chris Chester’s Tigers were thoroughly de-clawed, losing 64-6 to the Leeds Rhinos.

Meanwhile, in Hull, the black and white side of Hull consolidated their position in the top six with a hard-fought victory over the Leigh Leopards. Hull lead 12-0 by half-time, and managed to withstand a second half Leigh comeback, eventually running out 18-12 winners at the MKM Stadium.

In the rounds final game, St Helens hosted the Huddersfield Giants. Despite the Giants showing a knack in previous weeks and months of surprising bigger teams, there was no such display on this occasion, as St Helens ran out comfortable 52-4 winners at the Totally Wicked Stadium. This result moves the Saints up to third in the Super League table, just two points behind rivals Wigan in second.
