It’s safe to say that Ian did not enjoy a good weekend in his predictions in round-twenty-four. Two correct picks from six (in fairness, we were both wrong about Salford’s victory of Warrington – as I’m sure were many) doesn’t help his cause in bridging what is turning into a chasm between us in the race for prediction supremacy. With just three round remaining, can he make up the required ground?

Round twenty-four kicked off in Lancashire, as the Leigh Leopards welcomed the Castleford Tigers into their den. In the battle of the big cats, it was the Tigers who were left to limp away to lick their wounds, as the Leopards raced to a 46-6 victory.

Friday night saw two games take place, both noteworthy in their own respects, but it was the tie in Warrington which ended up being the story of the weekend as the patched-together Salford side stunned the Warrington Wolves at the Halliwell Jones Stadium, claiming only their third win of the campaign, and casting serious doubt on the future of Sam Burgess in the process. The Red Devils’ fans haven’t had much to cheer about this year, their 25-12 victory in Cheshire is sure to live on in the memory.

Meanwhile, over in East Yorkshire, Hull KR bounced back from their loss away at the Rhinos last week by edging a nervy clash with top-four-chasing St Helens 12-8 at Craven Park. It was a game low on scoring but high on defensive quality, and the Robins now only require one more win to clinch their maiden League Leaders Shield, with cross-city rivals Hull FC next on the agenda, on Sunday afternoon.

Saturday saw a triumvirate of games take place to close out the round. Firstly, on the black and white side of Hull, the Leeds Rhinos beat their second Hull-based team in as many weeks by beating Hull FC 34-0 at the MKM. It was a costly game for the Arlie Birds in more ways than one, as on top of the result, they also lost Herman Ese’ese and Ed Chamberlain to injury, adding to an already considerable list ahead of the derby this Sunday.

Staying in Yorkshire, the second game saw fellow play-off contenders Wakefield Trinity brush aside the Huddersfield Giants 48-2 at the DIY Kitchens Stadium. This result, coupled with Hull FC’s loss against Leeds means that Daryl Powell’s side move into sixth place.

The final game of the weekend saw the reigning champions WIgan Warriors travel to the SOuth of France to take on the Catalans Dragons. It was a one-sided affair in Perpignan as the Cherry and Whites ran out 40-4 winners, with Liam Marshall claiming a hat trick on the day. Their victory here means that Wigan remain four points behind Hull KR at the summit of Super league.
