Oh, what a weekend! Hull KR have more or less staked their claim to the 2025 League Leader’s Shield (they can still technically be caught, but the points difference makes it highly unlikely), and what’s more, we did it in a derby, no less! Elation in East Hull, then, and devastation in the West of the city as they failed to take advantage of Wakefield’s slip-up against Castleford earlier in the week.
The weekend began with a rare two-game Thursday evening. Firstly, Huddersfield Giants sank without a trace at home to the Leeds Rhinos, losing 26-0 as the Rhinos barely got out of second gear. The better game, arguably, was to be found at the home of the Super League wooden spooners for 2025, Salford Red Devils, whose patchwork team once again shone against stronger opposition, although this week falling just short, being beating 17-16 by the Catalans Dragons.
Friday also saw two games played in the Betfred Super League. The shock of the round came in the form of Castleford Tigers defeating neighbours Wakefield Trinity at home to put a spanner in the works of their rivals play-off hopes. The Tigers ran out 26-22 winners at the Mend-a-Hose Jungle to climb to tenth in the table.
Over in Lancashire, meanwhile, Wigan Warriors and St Helens renewed their age-old rivalry at the Totally Wicked Stadium. In the league’s second biggest derby1 (behind the Hull derby, of course) Wigan managed to keep the pressure on Hull KR at the top of the table by beating their biggest rivals 18-4 away from home.
Saturday’s game saw yet another uninspired performance in an ever-lengthening streak of disappointment for the Warrington Wolves as they fell to the Leigh Leopards by a score of 34-12. The Leopards are still chasing a top-four finish, meanwhile the Wolves are well off the pace in eighth.
Finally came the biggest match of the weekend, the 249th Hull derby. Hull FC were hoping to go to Craven Park and deal a blow to their rivals’ League Leaders Shield chase, as well as move themselves into the top six. It was not to be, however, as Hull KR won their sixth derby on the bounce by a scoreline of 18-4 to move tantalisingly close to their first League Leaders Shield. Victory over Wakefield Trinity next weekend will seal it once and for all, but given the points differential, the contest is more or less over already.
