The feeling in the press box at Wembley Stadium was one of enormous frustration, after England served up a dreadful performance for the first Ashes test match in a generation.

It has to be said that our national team stuck to their task, but they never looked like really troubling the World Champions, thanks mainly due to their misfiring attack.

Unfortunately, no doubt aided by Hull KR coach Willie Peters, the Green and Gold clad men had obviously done their homework on potential Jack in the Box Mikey Lewis, and he was nowhere near as threatening as many had hoped.

What really hurt most though, was that Australia were obviously there for the taking, they coughed up far too much possession and, on another day, would probably have been made to pay a hefty price against top grade international opposition, but England didn’t have the hunger, or the cutting edge needed to take advantage of such profligacy.

Moving on to Liverpool this weekend, England desperately need to make very necessary changes, because what was dished up at Wembley simply was nowhere near good enough.

Many people on the dreaded social media platforms are calling for a debut for Gold Coast Titans Player of the Year AJ Brimson, and a return to the international scene for Hull KR winger Joe Burgess among others, and it’s very easy to see why.

It has to be said that Jake Wardle did cause Australia some nervous moments in the first test, and it must be said that maybe Burgess might be the man to actually take advantage of the sort of problems he could cause again at the Hill Dickinson Stadium.

One would also suggest that some more grunt, maybe in the form of Leeds Rhinos enforcer Mikolaj Oledzki could also get the hosts on the front foot early, and would the kicking game of Harry Smith have been able to pin the Aussies down better at Wembley, or could it be just what is needed on Saturday?

Fortunately, those are questions that all need answering by Shaun Wane, who certainly hinted at changes after the defeat in North West London.

There certainly feels like a sense of responsibility on the shoulders of the England players who take to the field this weekend, with this match and the final test at Headingley having been sold out for months in advance, and not wanting a dead rubber in West Yorkshire, and especially after all the hype of this ‘Rivalry Reignited’ it would be a sad state of affairs if the visitors wrapped up yet another series victory at the earliest opportunity.
