Ladies and gentlemen, we have a first for our predictions series on Gerrim Onside. Yes, for the first time since our little competition started in February 2025, Ian has taken the lead! He managed this by getting Bradford’s winning margin right for the final game of the round, but, to be fair to him, he’d still be ahead by a point even if he hadn’t. So, congratulations to Ian, just don’t get used to it!
The round started out with one of Super League’s fastest-growing rivalries writing a new chapter as the Wigan Warriors welcomed their neighbours, Leigh Leopards, to the Brick Community Stadium. A closely-fought and feisty affair was expected, but the Warriors had other ideas. Showing the kind of imperious form that has made them one of the current era’s most dominant sides, the Warriors dished out a 54-0 pasting to the Leopards. Harry Smith’s kicking game stifled Leigh all game, and he crossed for two tries to cement a man-of-the-match performance.
Friday night saw a battle of two of the early-season basement dwellers as the Castleford Tigers hosted the Huddersfield Giants. Both sides have started the 2026 season with back-to-back losses, so they were both eager to register their first points. It was the hosts who came away from the Jungle with those precious competition points; however, they eased to a 34-8 victory. This result leaves Huddersfield as one of only two sides to remain winless in 2026. The other winless side, Hull KR (more on them shortly), visit the Accu Stadium this Sunday for the first of two back-to-back encounters in the league and cup.
York Knights added to the scalp they claimed on the first night of the season, when they beat champions Hull KR, by beating their cross-city rivals Hull FC. Once again, it was a drop goal that won the day for the Knights, who held out through a tense final few minutes to come away from Hull as 17-16 victors. It was a torrid night for the Black and Whites on the injury front too, as captain Aidan Sezen, Jed Cartwright, and Harvey Barron all limped off at different stages. So bad were the team’s injury troubles that they ended the game with only one person on the bench and twelve players on the field. No doubt the Airlie Birds will be hoping these are just minor knocks as they prepare to face Wakefield Trinity this Friday.
Warrington continued their strong start to the campaign as they brushed aside Wakefield Trinity 27-16 at the Halliwell Jones Stadium on Saturday evening. It remained a tight contest right up until late in the game, and Wakefield were giving a good account of themselves against strong opposition. It was Marc Sneyd’s kicking that proved the game-breaker, with his 77th-minute drop goal putting the game beyond Trin’s reach, before Toby King scored a try to well and truly put the game to bed.
Another team that continued their rich vein of form was St Helens, who had a very successful trip to Catalonia this past Saturday, defeating the Catalans Dragons 36-4. With the score standing at just 6-0 to the Saints at half-time, it was anybody’s contest. It was the Saints that grabbed hold of the game’s momentum and wouldn’t let go as the second half wore on; however, they scored a further thirty points in the second half, with Kyle Feldt showing fine finishing skills towards the end of the game.
Speaking of fine finishing skills, this year’s Las Vegas game was dominated by a powerful winger renowned for his ability to get the ball over the line, whatever the situation. Maika Sivo exploded into life as a force in Super League in Sin City, scoring four tries as his side, Leeds Rhinos, thumped the World Club Champions, Hull KR, 58-6 in the showpiece game. Rovers could be said to be showing the effects of their bruising encounter with the Brisbane Broncos last week. Still, such a statement would do an injustice to the Rhinos’ excellent performance, who simply played the Robins off the park. The reigning champions will now go to Huddersfield, desperately needing a win to get their title defence back on track.
Closing out Round Three on Sunday were two newly promoted sides who had surprised a lot of fans and pundits so far, as the Bradford Bulls entertained Toulouse Olympique at Odsal. TOXIII came into the match on the back of back-to-back victories against Castleford and Wakefield, whereas Bradford had celebrated the return of Super League rugby to Odsal by dispatching Catalans. It was the Bulls who would take the spoils on Sunday, however, as they ran out 18-6 victors in West Yorkshire.
