Huddersfield rue ‘unprecedented’ injury crisis
The Huddersfield Giants may find themselves at the bottom of the Super League at the time of writing, but that is the least of their worries. A club statement was released today outlining what the club referred to as an ‘unprecedented’ injury crisis. The Giants were already struggling with injuries before this past weekend’s clash with the reigning champions, Hull KR, but those struggles were compounded by a further two injuries. Both George Flanagan and Matty English were helped from the field in their 32-6 loss to the Robins, with both set to miss at least this weekend’s return clash with Rovers in the Challenge Cup, with more time on the sidelines a possibility, depending on the results of scans this week.
The club statement also said that the club currently had sixteen first-team players unavailable. With those players being as follows: Niall Evalds (calf injury, expected back in April), Adam Swift (hamstring, April), Sam Halsall (hamstring, April), Adam Clune (ankle, April), Zac Woolford (head knock, monitoring continues), Sam Hewitt (ankle, surgery scheduled), Harry Rushton (thumb, May), Matty English (knee, awaiting scans), Joe Greenwood (ankle, April), Liam Sutcliffe (hamstring, July), George Flanagan (ankle, awaiting scans), Archie Sykes (head knock, monitoring continues), Marshall Land (ankle, May), Logan Blacker (thigh, April), and, finally, Tanguy Zenon, who is cup-tied.
Hull loses a further two players
Speaking of teams experiencing an injury crisis, Hull FC will also be without Jed Cartwright and Harvey Barron for the foreseeable future. Both players limped off during their 17-16 loss to the York Knights a fortnight ago, with Cartwright suffering a hamstring tear that will see him sidelined for roughly three months, and Barron fell foul of an ankle injury, which will see him out of action for about a month.
They join the likes of Joe Batchelor (calf tear, expected to be out for a month), Will Pryce, Joe Ward (both season-ending ACL injuries), and Herman Ese’ese on the injury list. In more positive news for the Black and Whites, however, Ryan Westerman is nearing full fitness, as is Roman Dawson, with Ese’ese also said to be progressing well ahead of his planned return in April.
Bevan French to miss four months
In worrying news for the current undefeated league leaders, the Wigan Warriors, it was revealed today that their star man Bevan French had suffered a hamstring tear during their win over Toulouse Olympique this past weekend, ruling the former Man of Steel out for about four months.
Halfback French suffered the injury after being moved to full back, a move necessitated by the Warriors missing Jai Field, who was out following his hospitalisation for appendicitis. French is no stranger to the injury list, having suffered long-term injuries in both the 2024 and 2025 seasons, which saw him miss a significant chunk of game time as well. It is poor timing indeed for the Warriors, who will now be without both star Australians, with Field set to miss at least a few more weeks.
Quick News
- St Helens’ Jacob Host suffered a broken leg in the game against Bradford. He is set to miss four months of action. Nene Macdonald was also brought off during the Bradford game due to an unspecified issue, and George Delaney failed a HIA test.
- Waqa Blake didn’t return for the second half of the same game due to a shoulder issue. He is likely to miss this week’s Challenge Cup game against Wigan.
- Ash Handley left the field during Leeds Rhinos’ win over Castleford on Sunday. Coach Brad Arthur has described the change as merely ‘precautionary’, however.
- York Knights’ Jordan Thompson has suffered an apparent torn bicep and is set to miss 3-4 months of action.
