Ian maintains his advantage, but I’ve clawed the difference back to a single point after a strong weekend. I only guessed the wrong winner for one game, and in my defence, we both predicted Leigh to beat Catalans on Friday night, but the Dragons prevailed, and my clean sweep was in tatters. Drat and blast.
Last Thursday saw Wakefield Trinity and Hull FC renew hostilities after their fight for the final play-off place last season. It was the Trin who came out on top in 2025, and they came out on top again on Thursday night in a scrappy 14-10 win at the DIY Kitchens Stadium. Hull seemed set to take a 10-4 advantage into half-time, before a final Hail Mary play from Wakefield saw them score through Oliver Pratt after the half-time hooter, with Jack Sinfield adding the extras. In a second-half riddled with errors on both sides, a Will Tate try on the 56th minute turned out to be the winning score, as neither side could break down the other for the remaining twenty-four minutes of the game.
Friday saw two closely-fought games take place as Leigh Leopards welcomed the Catalans Dragons to the Leigh Sports Village, and York Knights entertained the high-flying Warrington Wolves. In a back-and-forth encounter at the Leopard’s Den, the Dragons managed to outlast a patched-up Leigh outfit, eventually running out 22-16 winners, with the boot of Toby Sexton proving the difference on the night.
The York Knights almost produced another huge shock on Friday night as they valiantly fought back twice from a double-digit deficit to lead the game at one stage, only to fall eight points short to the still-undefeated Wolves side by a scoreline of 38-30 in a thrilling encounter in North Yorkshire. The Knights continued to prove, even in defeat, that they are a side that a team should take lightly at their own peril.
The Wigan Warriors also continued their perfect start to the campaign as they brushed aside Toulouse 36-16 in the South of France. The Warriors were just too strong for the French outfit, who nonetheless showed grit and determination to keep the scoreline respectable against a side that out-matched them across every position, and they did so without their star forward, Tyler Dupree, who couldn’t play against his parent club.
To round off the trio of teams who showed grit in defeat, the Bradford Bulls can count themselves unlucky not to come away from the Brewdog Stadium. Indeed, the Bulls took a – albeit slim – lead into the half-time break, being 10-4 up against Paul Rowley’s men. Not long after the second half began, they extended their lead to 14-4, through a Connor Wynne try, but the Saints fought back, and as the game entered its final phases, Bradford were 22-20 up. It was ill-discipline that cost the Bulls in the end, however, as Elliot Peposhi was dismissed for a high shot. The Red Vee took advantage of their extra man and sealed the win with a Deon Cross try, converted by Jackson Hastings.
The two sides that experienced the bright lights of Las Vegas last week came back to reality on the Sunday, as Sin City losers Hull KR travelled to the Huddersfield Giants, and high rollers Leeds Rhinos hosted the Castleford Tigers. It was Hull KR who came out best in the unlikely basement battle, coming away with a routine 32-6 win. A result that got their season out of the starting blocks, but another costly one for Huddersfield, who, as well as falling to another defeat, lost both George Flanagan and Matty English to injuries. English’s injury in particular looked like it could signal a long stay on the sidelines, and, indeed, Karl Lawton was banned for three matches for the tackle which injured the Giants forward.
Maika Sivo continued his fine try-scoring form on the Sunday, too, adding to his four-try haul from Vegas with a hat trick in front of the Headingley faithful. The Tigers would have been hoping to build momentum on the back of their first win over Huddersfield the week previously, but they never really posed a challenge for the Rhinos, and ended up as convincing 22-4 losers on the day.
