The bounceback from my horror weekend in Round Seven surprises even me, as I went from having a one point advantage last week to a fourteen-point advantage this week after a spotless weekend of predicted winners, and helped by two correct first try scorers in the Leigh-Warrington and Catalans-Salford games. We’ve decided to change things up from this week though, and instead of picking first try scorers, we’re going to try and predict Man of the Matches instead. We’re still trying to get the formula just right, so do let us know which you prefer in the comments.
It was the much-hyped ‘Rivals Round’ this week, as local derbies were the dish of the day over the Easter weekend. Starting over in West Yorkshire, as Castleford Tigers made the short trip to Wakefield Trinity in the WF postcode derby. Castleford were sitting pretty at half-time on a 12-0 lead at the DOY Kitchens stadium, only to capitulate spectacularly in the second half as they eventually succumbed to a 13-12 defeat, with the decisive point coming from the boot of Mason Lion, who dropped the goal for the win.
On Good Friday, the old rivalries burned brightly as the Hull derby and the classic Wigan-Saints derby took centre stage. The day was kicked off with a thriller in Hull as the Robins claimed victory over their old rivals once again, running out 28-14 victors, to stretch their run of consecutive derby victories to five in a row. The biggest talking point happened just sixteen minutes into the game, as Cade Cust was given his marching orders for trying to decapitate a high challenge on Artur Mourgue.
In the later game (which is called a derby despite the two sides being from different counties, but whatever) reigning champions Wigan Warriors survived a late scare to see off the challenge of St Helens by a score of 24-14. The hosts had built up an 18-2 lead in the second half, but a late sure from the Saints saw the game turned into a tense affair, heading into the final minutes at 18-14. Much to the relief of the champions, a late Abbas Miski try saw they over the line and moves them within two points of leaders Hull KR.
Later on on Good Friday, bottom-of-the-table Huddersfield Giants failed once more to get off the mark for 2025 with a 28-6 defeat at the hands of the Leeds Rhinos. There wasn’t much to seperate the sides going into half-time, with the Rhinos holding a slim 6-0 lead, but as has tended to be the case this season, Huddersfield ran out of steam and were put to the sword in the second half.
Rounding off the weekend on Saturday was the final local(ish) derby of the weekend, as the Leigh Leopards took on the Warrington Wolves, as well as a trip to the South of France for strugglers Salford Red Devils. Leigh just about managed to edge a tense game at the Leigh Sports Village, continuing their impressive run of form with a 18-14 victory over the side they will meet in the Challenge Cup semi-final in just a few weeks.
A spirited-as-ever Salford side were once again summarily brushed aside by the Dragons, as the Red Devils were dispatched by a score of 38-10, with their troubles continuing to mount as the weeks go on, it’s becoming ever more difficult to foresee where Salford’s next win might come from.
