The Rules:

• Each person predicts the results of every Super League match.
• Predicting the correct winner will get you 1 point.
• If the predictor’s scoreline has the same winning margin, then 4 points will be awarded (only if the predicted winning team is correct).
• Correctly predicting the exact score will win you an additional 5 points.
• Two bonus points will be awarded if the first try scorer is predicted correctly, whereas 1 point will be awarded if the selected player scores during the match.

Just like that, another Super League (regular) season comes to an end. It feels like only yesterday that I and many other fellow Robins were slinking away from York with our tails between our legs following a shock opening day defeat to the Knights, and here we are in September with just the play-off in front of us. For the second consecutive year, I have claimed bragging rights over my frenemy from over the river. Despite it looking for a considerable amount of time like I might relinquish my predictions crown, I instead ended up with a comfortable twenty-point cushion.

With the end of the season, we’re feeling like adding a few extra predictions and opinions, just for fun, to put a bow on the 2026 season. We’ve each selected who we think will win the Grand Final and the Man of Steel, and we’ve also picked our surprise package and biggest disappointments of the year.

Grand Final Winners: Nathan – Wigan Warriors, Ian – Wigan Warriors

Man of Steel Winner: Nathan – Jake Connor, Ian – Jake Connor

Blimey, it turns out we can agree on something! There really doesn’t seem to be any other likely winner of the Grand Final than Wigan, who look as close to invincible as it is possible for a rugby league team to be. It is rare for a Man of Steel award to be won back-to-back, but we’re both backing Jake Connor to do just that. Ian also thinks it could be Harry Smith, which I concede is a good call and is likely. I would also add Lachie Miller to the possible mix too, although I think Connor edges it.

Surprise Package: Nathan – Toulouse Olympique XIII, Ian – Warrington Wolves

Biggest Disappointment: Nathan – Hull KR, Ian – Hull KR

The only thing we can’t agree on is the surprise package! Someone check the skies for flying pigs! In all seriousness, Toulouse may have never been serious contenders for the top six, but they were never expected to be, and put into context, their eighth-placed finish is a monumental achievement. They finished above their nearest rivals, Catalans, despite them having far less top-flight experience and, more importantly, half the central funding. Their mid-table finish is only half the story, though, as they played some eye-catching rugby and won many hearts and minds along the way.

There was only really one team who could be the biggest disappointment of the season. Yes, Rovers were crowned World Champions (and I still pinch myself every time I type that) back in February, but their league campaign, the year after winning all three trophies, has fallen well short of expectations. True, they did manage to make it into the top six because of a historically disappointing season for St Helens, but that shouldn’t be a cause for celebration for the reigning champions. Of course, there still exists the possibility that they could retain their title to send Willie Peters off, but winning from sixth has never been done before, and not that it is impossible, but it is highly unlikely. If they manage to beat Warrington this week (a big ask in itself), then Wigan await them in the semi-finals, and that is about as far as I can imagine they might make, and even then I’m being uncharacteristically optimistic.

On behalf of Ian and myself, thank you for reading our silly little review series this year. Its readership has steadily increased over the season, and when compared to 2025, which astounds me, that anyone would want to read this, but obviously some of you are just masochists… We will be back next season, but in the meantime, enjoy the play-offs and the World Cup(s)!
